Vintage 1960s Sputnik Atomic Brooch Dark Green Cabochon Gold Tone 2.5cm
An attractive vintage Sputnik-style brooch, probably dating from the late 1950s or 1960s.
The brooch has a polished oval cabochon of very dark green colour, surrounded by an elaborate arrangement of curved wirework and radiating stems finished with small polished balls. Its distinctive burst design reflects the Atomic and Space Age fashions that became popular following the launch of Sputnik in 1957.
The stone may be nephrite jade or another polished green stone, although it has not been professionally tested and is therefore described simply as a dark green cabochon.
Fitted with a hinged pin and rollover safety catch.
A striking and unusual example of mid-century jewellery.
In good vintage condition. The dark green cabochon remains securely mounted and has a pleasing polished surface, with light marks consistent with previous wear. The surrounding wirework and ball-tipped decoration appear complete, with some slight variation or movement in the individual elements arising from their delicate construction.
The pin and rollover safety catch are present and appear to operate correctly. There is light surface wear and some variation to the gold-coloured finish. No obvious chips or cracks were identified in the cabochon.
