Original British press photograph of Sir Noël Coward, dated 23 July 1920, taken during the early formative years of Coward’s career, prior to his major theatrical breakthrough of the mid-1920s.
The photograph was taken by London theatrical photographer Claude Harris, whose studio work documented many figures of the Edwardian and early inter-war stage. The image originates from the Daily Mail Library and retains its original newspaper caption card affixed to the reverse, complete with contemporary handwritten date and internal library markings.
Press photographs of this period were working newsroom objects — circulated, handled, and reused for publication rather than preserved as presentation pieces. Survival with the original caption card intact adds historical integrity and confirms its authenticity as a genuine early twentieth-century press print, not a later reproduction.
The portrait shows Coward as a young man in his early twenties, several years before the success of The Vortex (1924) established him as a major theatrical figure. Early dated images from this stage of his career are notably scarcer than later publicity photographs.
Condition
Original gelatin silver print. The photograph has never been folded. There is light surface emulsion wear visible in places, consistent with age and period newsroom handling. The original caption card shows expected edge wear and minor loss typical of working press material. No structural tears or restoration.
An honest and untouched example of early British press photography.
