Victorian Cranberry Glass Heart Shaped Sweetmeat Dish Clear Handle & Feet c1890

Description

A charming late Victorian cranberry glass heart-shaped sweetmeat dish, dating to approximately c.1880–1900.

The dish has a beautifully formed heart-shaped body in rich translucent cranberry glass, with a gently undulating rim following the heart-shaped outline. It is finished with an applied clear glass loop handle and raised upon a series of decorative clear glass petal or shell-form feet, creating an attractive contrast with the deep cranberry colour.

The underside displays the hand-worked construction particularly well, with the clear glass feet individually applied around the base. Small bubbles, inclusions and irregularities associated with traditional glassmaking can also be seen within the glass and add to the character of the piece.

These decorative dishes are variously described as sweetmeat, bonbon, candy or nut dishes, with “sweetmeat dish” being particularly appropriate for a British Victorian example.

The combination of the heart-shaped cranberry body, clear loop handle and multiple applied feet makes this an especially attractive example, with considerable decorative appeal as well as being a collectable piece of Victorian cranberry glass.

Date: Late 19th century, circa 1880–1900
Material: Cranberry and clear glass
Origin: Probably British or European
Length: approximately 16 cm
Maximum height: approximately 7 cm to the top of the handle.

Condition Report

In good antique condition, retaining a strong cranberry colour and displaying very well.

The clear applied loop handle and decorative glass feet are intact. There are some light surface marks and small bubbles, inclusions and irregularities within the glass, consistent with traditional hand-worked manufacture and use.

Small dark specks/inclusions can be seen within the cranberry glass in places and are considered characteristics of manufacture rather than damage.

Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition report and give a good indication of the appearance and character of the piece.
