Dimensions:
A large and decorative late Victorian French chalkware figure depicting a Parisian street boy or costermonger, shown in a relaxed standing pose with hands in pockets and head gently tilted in quiet contemplation. The figure wears a dark cap, mustard yellow jacket, red waistcoat, blue cropped trousers, and black boots, all set upon a naturalistically modelled base.
Dating from the late Victorian to early Edwardian period, circa 1890–1910, this type of figure was produced as an interior decorative object for the home, often displayed in entrance halls, conservatories, or reception rooms. The subject reflects the period’s fondness for romanticised street scenes and the character of the Parisian gamin, a popular decorative motif of the time.
Likely French, or French-influenced Continental European in origin, the figure is made in traditional chalkware and retains its original hand-painted finish with a warm and characterful colour palette. The expressive modelling of the face, confident stance, and generous scale give the piece strong decorative presence and make it a more unusual example than the smaller figures more commonly encountered.
Standing at approximately 26 inches high, this is an impressive period decorative piece with good scale and visual impact. Examples of this size are increasingly difficult to find, particularly those retaining their original character and surface.
Condition is good antique decorative condition with light age-related wear, including some minor areas of surface rubbing consistent with age. The figure remains sound and displays very well, with the patina adding to its period charm and authenticity.
